Use Spotlight for Quick Math, Definitions, and Finding Certain File Types

Hi all! Today I’m going to show you how to do some spiffy stuff with Spotlight, which is the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of your screen!

To get started with Spotlight, either click the magnifying glass or press (Command + Spacebar).

Launch Programs

To quickly launch a program (instead of finding it in your applications folder), just start typing in the program name and hit enter!

Quick Math

Spotlight is great for some quick addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division! Just start typing in numbers and spotlight will update the equation right below your entry. Don’t press enter unless you want to open up calculator! Oh.. and it follows PEMDAS too for all you math geeks!

Definitions

Ever need to quickly get the definition of a word? Well with spotlight you can type in a word, highlight the dictionary item that appears, and click enter! Bam, the quickest way you can look a word up. Plus, you don’t even need the internet.

Finding Certain Types of Files

Ever need to find a file where the title is in a song, photo, and word processing document? Well Spotlight can be told to only show results of one file type! Just enter the word, then a :, then the type of file. e.g. Apple:music.

Spotlight away!

Adjust Your Mac’s Volume Without Making a Sound

Mac Volume Icon

How many times have you given yourself up watching Hulu in class by changing your volume and hearing a loud SQUAWK SQUAWK SQUAWK? Too many too count right??? Well today’s your lucky day because I’m going to show you how to avoid that!

Hold down shift when you press your volume keys for a change in volume that doesn’t make any sound!

Or if you’d like to turn it off altogether, just go to System Preferences>Sound and uncheck “Play feedback when volume is changed”.
